DECEMBER MEETING ~Thank you to all our members and visitors who came along this evening to see the wonderful demonstration by Jacqui Arnold "Jingle All the Way". Before the doors... opened our committee was busy preparing the hall. The sales table was full of festive goodies. The Festive Fiver Arrangements were arriving. The Publicity table was promoting the Festive Flower & Food Show DVD, NAFAS 2019 Diamond Anniversary events as well as our trip to Ely Cathedral Flower Festival next year. The mulled wine & mince pies were ready and our demonstrator was busy prepping. 6.30pm and it was like the Harrods sale as everyone was eager to enjoy the evening ahead.
Jacqui's demonstration was amazing, the garden plant material she used was so varied with a few extra special surprises that many of our members had not seen before. & of course a touch of glitter. Then came the flowers and wow, wow, wow! The variety in each design, the beautiful colours, the different textures was quite spectacular with plenty of oooh's & aaaah's from the audience. Jacqui has given permission for two of her designs to be posted. As you will see each design had more than one placement so we just have to leave it to your imagination as to how the final stage looked with 13 lucky people taking home raffle prizes.

We were invited by Sainsbury Veteran Association to give a flower arranging demonstration to their members - It was a chilly November afternoon at the United Reform Church Hall but a warm welcome was received from the retired personnel of Sainsbury from the Bishop's Stortford area.
Our member Valerie Phillips assisted by Beverly Moore entertained the group with interesting facts about their flower arranging experiences. Several of the members were keen gardeners and were interested to hear about the garden plant materials used in the designs.
The designs created were included in their Christmas Raffle , a nice surprise to the members of the audience. Needless to say the flowers were the first prizes to be taken.
Information about the flower club were handed out so we hope that in the future we may see members of this group visit us on a club night.

‘The World of Pantomime’
Jacqui Arnold - National Demonstrator took part and no doubt we will hear more about this when she visits our club on December 5th.
I spoke with Jacqui at the show and she is looking forward to visiting us and gave me permission to take a photograph of her design.
So why not bring a friend along on the 5th, or even better why not bring friends to enjoy the work by Jacqui in her Christmas Demonstration “Jingle All the Way”.
As a member you do not have to pay for a ticket but we would ask for a contribution towards the festive refreshments.
Tickets for non-members are £12.50 and it would be helpful to know in advance your ticket requirement so that we can cater accordingly the refreshments.
Please email [email protected] for Tickets.

Back in September our demonstrator Mellissa Sheldrake mentioned that her husband would be dressed as an elf for her demonstration at The Festive Flower & Food show in Blackpool. So here's the proof ! A wonderful demonstration of alternative Christmas Trees by Mellissa, aided by Doug & Amanda. Photographs posted with Mellissa's permission.
THESE WERE THE COMPONENTS THAT BEVERLY RECEIVED A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE FESTIVE FLOWER & FOOD SHOW AT BLACKPOOL - CHECK OUT THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GALLERY TO SEE WHAT BEVERLY CREATED. SHE WAS NOT LUCKY ENOUGH TO RECEIVE AN AWARD BUT IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE TO TAKE PART IN THE NATIONAL SHOW - THE FEEDBACK FROM THE JUDGES WAS INVALUABLE.
Tricia Pratley, Maggie Hansford & Pat Woodward took part in an event held in Bishop's Stortford Library earlier in October entitled "Fun Palaces" The event was organised to promote local groups and associations and to engage with the local people.
Whilst it was great to take part, if we were to participate another year we may well encourage the children to make small flower arrangements to take home which seemed more fitting for the age groups that visited the library.
As you can see though a great display by our trio of flower arrangers who did a good job promoting our club.
Here is a rundown of what was on offer.
12.30 to 1pm - Boundary Flower Club will be showing how to do a flower arrangement
1pm - Wool Craft and Anyone Can Do Cake Decorating
1.30 to 2pm - Annie's Percussion Workshop
2 to 2.45pm - Ukulele Workshop for 8 to 80 year olds
2.30 to 3.30pm - Learn to program the BBC Microbit and Learn how to do English Paper Piercing and help us make a quilt for Project Linus
Ever wondered what happens at a NAFAS AGM?
Beverly Moore our member attended the 2017 AGM at Bishopsgate Institute in London on Wednesday 11th October.
NAFAS members from around the UK & Northern Ireland gathered for this annual event.
As National Photography Competition Secretary this year, Beverly set up the display showing all the winning entries from the six classes.
These winning entries will also be on display at the Festive Flower & Food Show in Blackpool Winter Gardens 9th-11th November
They will be published on the NAFAS website http://www.nafas.org.uk/nafas/photography/ and on the NAFAS Photography Face book Page https://www.facebook.com/NafasPhotography/,
Retiring National Chairman Sheila Hadlow was thanked for her time and dedication given to NAFAS.
A warm welcome was given to the new National Chairman Jan Law & National Vice Chairman Christina Curtis
Yes, there were the usual reports & presentations in the morning but the day was far from over – following a break for lunch a presentation was given by June Ford, Susan Phillips, Janet Sarchet, Graham Harmer, Pauline Martindale and Kathy Stangaard - London & Overseas Area - entitled ‘The Belles of London’
A Town Crier welcomed our new National Chairman Jan Law (London & Overseas area)
A standing ovation followed. A great start to the presentation.
What fun as we were taken on a bus journey, through the eyes of flower arrangers around London stopping at several iconic churches including Westminster Abbey, as we continued the journey we heard stories and legends relating to the church bells of London.
Kathy entertained us with her cockney rhyming slang and the presentation concluded with a sing-a-long “Doing the Lambeth Walk”.
So if anyone thinks that AGM’s are boring – Think again! Come along to a NAFAS National AGM you certainly will have an informative and entertaining day.

Full of interesting articles/step-by-step festive designs/WAFA report with photographs taken by our member Beverly Moore & National Photography Committee member during her time in Barbados. A great publication with something for everyone from novice to experienced flower arranger.
OCTOBER An enjoyable evening with Terri Potter and her demonstration "Attic Attack". We heard great stories of what lurks in Terri's Attic and this made for some interesting containers. Our own members had also been rummaging and brought flower arranging items for sale to raise funds. We welcomed 5 visitors, friendship & flowers; all in all a successful evening. Terri has kindly given permission for one of her designs to be posted.
Maggie Hansford took part in the Flower Festival at High Wych.
Our member Hannah Shine was awarded first place in both classes for floral arrangement at The Sawbridgeworth Allotment Show at the weekend. Well done Hannah.
SEPTEMBER MEETING We have all been on wonderful "Flights of Fancy" this evening when our demonstrator Mellissa Sheldrake took us up,up, and away with her stunning floral designs and ingenious mechanics produced by her husband Doug.
We have permission by Mellissa to post photos of two of her designs but we will keep quiet as to the mode of flight depicted so as not to spoil the surprise for others who may see this demonstration.
This was our first meeting after the Summer break and with a chi...ll in the air and orders being taken for 2018 Flower Arranger magazine, Diaries & Calendars everyone was wishing the summer would return.
Maybe we could all fly off to warmer climes on one of Melissa's flights of fancy.
PHOTOS OF ALL THE DESIGNS WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT OUR NEXT MEETING FOR THOSE WHO WERE UNABLE TO ATTEND. IN MEANTIME A FEW PHOTOS OF TWO OF MELLISSA'S DESIGNS ARE IN OUR GALLERY.

June 10th
15 members enjoyed a workshop today learning new techniques using wire.
Valerie Phillips was our tutor and seeing stub wires, reel wires, bullion wires, paper covered wires we were all Intrigued as to how our 'Wirey Wonders workshop would evolve.
Our first challenge ! Paper covered wire was bound around either stub wires or thick garden wire to form leaf or other shapes, garden twine was then attached to form a grid where plant material, beads, buttons etc could be attached.
Most created at least two structures and these would be decorated at leisure.
We were also shown how to create our own stand with a technique commonly used by Gregor Lersch. We were shown the technique using paper covered wire and stub wires and we were able to take away wires etc to further develop at home.
Next Valerie demonstrated a technique using reel wire, bullion wire & eyelash yarn taking inspiration from Dr. Christina Curtis.
There was a lot of 'scrunching' going on as twisted & twiddled, each creating quite different looking structures.
It seemed for many of us that we would never finish, but finish we did and as we displayed all of our Wirey wonders at the end of the day it was great to see so many different interpretations of this technique.
We enjoyed our lunch break sitting in the sunshine surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Manuden village.
Hopefully our members will submit photographs in the future of designs they have created using these 3 techniques.
Lots more photos in the Gallery.

June 6th - Following a very wet and windy day and a torrential downpour this evening there was no chance to enjoy an alfresco refreshment break on the patio, but we did enjoy Vicki Hease 'Alfresco Summer' demonstration as she shared her childhood memories of summer and family holidays.
Vicki has kindly given permission for one of her designs to be posted. We won't share her stories so as not to spoil it for other clubs who will be shown this new demonstration.
The publicity table had lots of interest this evening where photographs of Leoni & Beverly's Chelsea exhibit was on display.
Long service badges were presented to Marigold Hodge (25 years) & Pat Woodward (40 years).

Going Green & Getting SILVER!
Leoni Braz & Beverly Moore took inspiration for their RHS Chelsea Class 'The Cutting Edge' from Pantone's Colour of the Year 2017 - Greenery 15-0453
The scissor blade structures were created out of insulation board and a big thankyou goes to Arthur Clatworthy who kindly took up the challenge to follow through their idea of using this lightweight material.
A certain amount of pre-done work is allowed. The structures were covered with reindeer moss and to give a softer texture & hopefully show a 'cutting edge' technique the moss had been passed through a kitchen blender, then attached to the board with PVA glue. Several coats and a final sprinkle of the lime colour moss and the desired effect was achieved.
Ideas kept going round and round in circles in our minds about the bottom placement and looking at the list of green plant material we decided to create a circle base using equisetum, so 360 pieces individually cut to precisely 6cm were hot glued onto oasis foam to form a pallaside (This was also pre-prepared at home).
There were 13 sections of wet foam to complete the circle which required approx 28 pieces of equisetum cut into various lengths, so a further 360 pieces were all hot glued and this was carried out on site, it took a long time but a pristine look was being achieved rather than having pins showing.
Finally around 2.30 am the first flower was about to go in!
Placing the flowers was the easy part !
Santini 'Country' spray chrysanthemum - 50 stems
Hypericum mag.green power - 50 stems
Molucella - 40 stems
Veronica caya - 90 stems
Spray Rose 'snowflake' - 10 stems
Ornithoglum 20 stems
Anigozanthos - 10 stems
A selection of Sempervivums
Senecio rowleyanus
It was 6am we could do no more!
Tuesday morning we met with Boundary flower club Chairman Sue Holman and longstanding member Sue Hayter and were delighted and thrilled to tell them that we have received a Silver Medal to add to the clubs collection.

4th April - DEMONSTRATION - BARBARA COLLINS
Members arrived with a spring In their step and our venue this evening was certainly full of 'The Joys of Spring', the title of Barbara Collins' demonstration.
Photographs from the recent Cambridge group meeting and our trip to Hampton Court were on display.
Lonely Bouquet tags were available for members to pick up for use on National Flower Arranging Day on May 5th.
The events notice board was also very busy.
Following the usual notices long term membership badges were awarded to three of our members, Patricia Pratley 40 years, Eileen & Nicky Thompson both 25 years. (Eileen was not in attendance this evening)
It was then time to sit back and enjoy 'The Joys of Spring'
Barbara's passion for garden plant material was evident in the designs she created along with the seasonal selection of Spring flowers. The final stage was such an uplifting sight with Iris, Tulips, Daffodils, Ranunculus bursting into colour.
Barbara has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be posted.

OUR VISIT TO FLORIMANIA - HAMPTON COURT PALACE & GARDENS - March 25th.
38 of us set off on a chilly morning with our driver Derek from Richmond's Coaches. Traffic was a little slow on M25 but we had a comfortable journey. Upon arrival at Hampton Court Palace most of us headed to the cafe for a cuppa. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and as we walked through the rose garden and admired the spring flower borders and the blossom tree in full bloom we knew we were in for a good day.
The main purpose of our visit was for 'FLORIMANIA' where floral displays created by Surrey Area of NAFAS told the stories of Royal women with a love of gardens & flowers.
LOTS OF PHOTOS OF OUR DAY IN THE GALLERY.

SHOW THE LOVE CAMPAIGN
Green foliage hearts created by Anne Bell, our demonstrator at February meeting - Nicky Thompson who placed a heart in The Toning Rooms, Bishop's Stortford & Beverly Moore who displayed in Bishop's Stortford Library.
The overall aim of the campaign is to ‘show the love’ for all that could be lost due to climate change. Climate change can be seen through increased flooding, summer heat waves and the decline of bee populations, it is changing the seasons, affecting crops and flowers, and disturbing the journeys of migrating birds.

This evening was our AGM with quite a good turnout.
The publicity table was busy with members picking up the latest edition of The Flower Arranger magazine with designs featured by East of England designers.
Photographs of the demonstration from our previous meeting were displayed for anyone who may have missed the meeting.
Ideas for the "Show the Love" campaign were also on display & we hope to have some green foliage hearts created for Valentines Day.
The main notice board was full of diary events in and around our Area (East of England).
With everyone seated the AGM commenced with reports from the President, Chairman & Treasurer - Details of the subsequent discussions will be sent to all members in due course.
President, Eileen Thompson had now completed her 3 year term of office and was thanked by Sue Holman (Chairman) for her dedication and support over many years and more recently as Presiden. A gift was presented to Eileen.
Ann Godfrey has accepted the role of President and was presented with her President's badge by our Chairman.
Brenda Brinn, our programme secretary for the past 12 years has decided to stand down from this role.
Brenda received a huge round of applause for all her hard work over the years, and was presented with a gift and a photographic memory book of the many demonstrations & demonstrators that she had organised.
Trophies were presented for the most points gained at competitions throughout the year.
Novice Cup - Alba Rodrigues
Intermediate - Sue Holman
Advanced - Beverly Moore
The AGM took a little longer than planned so it was a quick refreshment break, then back to our seats to enjoy a demonstration by Anne Bell - "My kind of Flowers"
Despite limited time Anne produced five beautiful designs. Permission has been given for two designs to be featured along with a delightful "Share the Love" green heart which was also included in the raffle.
We now look forward to the year ahead.

Message from Area Chairman.
I am sure East of England members wil be interested in a notification received from National Chairman Sheila Hadlow. Sheila hopes all members and clubs will consider supporting this initiative with the W.I. Unfortunately as it is scheduled for 14th February many clubs may not have a meeting before that date.
This is the request:
WI Show the Love Campaign
Following recent successful meetings with the WI and the Board of Directors, it has been mutually agreed that both organisations will join together on two events this year, the WI Show the Love Campaign and the NAFAS Lonely Bouquet.
The WI Show the Love campaign takes place on Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2017.
The overall aim of the campaign is to ‘show the love’ for all that could be lost due to climate change. Climate change can be seen through increased flooding, summer heatwaves and the decline of bee populations, it is changing the seasons, affecting crops and flowers, and disturbing the journeys of migrating birds.
The WI is asking its supporters to stitch, knit, paint and bake beautiful green hearts.
The way that NAFAS will be involved, and the Board hope that this will be supported by the Areas, is that Areas and Clubs if they so wish create foliage green hearts throughout the 21 Areas. I attach a PDF of a tag produced by the Board for attaching to foliage green hearts. The WI ask that photos are taken of green hearts and shared online on 14 February #showthelove
The Board are continuing discussions with the WI, particularly with a view to a large foliage green heart being places at an iconic landmark in the London area.
Further details will be given and discussion held at the Area Chairmen’s Day, however, as this meeting is not until 23 January, just three weeks before Valentine’s Day, the Board thought it important that you receive details in advance of the meeting.
I have made mention of the Show the Love Campaign in my New Year letter to Clubs, advising that further details will be notified by their Area Chairman. I would be very grateful if you would kindly pass the information on to your Clubs at the earliest opportunity.
Information on the Show the Love Campaign can be found on the WI website https://www.thewi.org.uk/…/show-the-love-make-a-heart-to-wear.
