Another challenge - This time create a design using items that perhaps would normally be put into the recycling bin or the charity shop.
Lella Yates joined our flower club just as Lockdown started back in March, this is her first time to enter our floral fix challenge. She used an old tin, inside are small glass bottles to hold the flowers. The greenery is all from her garden - ivy, rosemary and red and yellow late flowering chrysanthemums. She did buy the pussy willow and the Lisianthus .
The ribbon was recycled from her daughter’s wedding.
Well done Lella.

Another recycled handbag by Christina Chalk. This one she made back in 2019
Hannah used a cardboard box covered in bubble wrap. Cake stand under the box to give it some height and show the trailing bits to best advantage.
Glass jam and spice jars filled with water.
Plant material: A leathery fern (label has gone AWOL!), late flowering Hebe, viburnum variegata, Christmas box (variegated), periwinkle (vinca major and vinca minor) (2 varieties), miscanthus Chinese silver grass, variegated jasmine trails and seed pods of iris foetidissima., and cosmos still blooming.

Christina Chalk created these creative & beautiful designs using a bag and a shoe that was destined for the charity shop.
Cardboard packaging gave an interesting texture to covering a cardboard base for this festive design. Dried hydrangea from the garden were sprayed turquoise to compliment all the glittery bits Beverly had in her Xmas box of goodies,
Coffee jar lids and cheesecake glass dishes came in very useful to create containers for Beverly’s design with the last of her sedum and alstroemerias from the garden. Water retaining crystals were used.
Something Beverly had made back in the spring using little health drink bottles to form a posy pad design.
Beverly used a piece of cardboard - made holes to hold plastic orchid cubes, covered with abaca (something left over from her Chelsea exhibit several years ago) gave it all a whoosh of gold spray paint.
Beverly used a cut down milk carton and covered it with fancy yarn.
Another lovely Halloween design, this is by our member Christina Chalk.
This delightful Halloween inspired design was made by our member Carol Giffen’s granddaughter Ellie.(12yrs) What great fun they had shopping for the flowers and pumpkin and then gathering the foliage. Well done Ellie. A flower arranger in the making.
Enjoy these spooky looking gerbera in Leoni Braz’s Halloween design.
Carol Giffen’s elegant Halloween design
Our member Ann Godfrey popped to the supermarket, purchased some spray Chrysanthemums, bucket and spiders web, added foliage from her garden to create this design without floral foam.
Hannah Shine continues to create autumn door wreaths for friends. Hannah used variegated aucuba, rosemary, miscanthus chinensis zebrinus (zebra grass), variegated box, euonymous (various), hebe Pageii, callicarpa
Profusion (purple berries), hydrangeas, and sedum spectabile.

Thankyou to our member Pat Woodward for this lovely autumnal door ring, Pat said she made it using from bits and pieces from her garden. She must have a lovely garden.
Following the NAFAS YouTube AGM Carol Giffen went shopping, on the way back collected some lovely stems from the hedgerows.
June Rowland has been busy creating her autumnal door ring using garden plant material.
Our member Nina enjoyed creating this design today - The colours compliments the container very well. All materials were supplied by David Tomson as part of his workshop programme during Covid.
Beverly has seen a YouTube video from Wessex & Jersey area if Nafas where Angela Turner had used fibre pots to cover a container. On another YouTube video with Jayne Edmonds she showed how corrugated cardboard could be used as a mechanic to hold plant material.
With a few bits available from her garden Autumn has arrived at no expense.

Our members continue to arrange flowers during lockdown - Member Nina Wing created this design for the table in her local church and used a vase for the other design.
Member Christina Chalk created this beautiful design for her granddaughter’s birthday, her granddaughter loves dogs especially the Dachshunds.
Christina used a jumbo block of oasis which she cut & then used her hands to shape it. White spray chrysanthemums were added and sprayed brown. The ears made from felt were cut out and also sprayed. Although not visible in the photo there is a tail which was made from rope and sprayed the same colour.
Christina explained how this was a challenge to create but one she enjoyed doing & the look on her granddaughters face when she saw it made it all worth it.
Christina enjoys creating floral animals, she prefers to make her own shapes rather than purchase them. Well done Christina.

Succulents are always useful to use in your arrangements.
Following the challenge to include succulents in an arrangement Beverly used sedum as a filler for this design all made with plant materials from her garden.
SUCCULENTS !
Have you thought about using succulents in your flower arranging designs. You may recall Beverly’s “A Box of Delights” at one of our competitions. Beverly is a regular contributor to the Floral Design Magazine and her design has been featured.
During lockdown perhaps check out the succulents you have in the garden and create a design. Send your photos to Beverly and we will feature them on here.

Beverly was given these beautiful flowers from Hannah Shine’s garden. Arranged without foam.
Hannah Shine created this using flowers from her lovely garden which would have been opened this weekend but sadly had to be cancelled due to covid19.
Hannah used phlomis (Jerusalem sage) irises, nodding grass, perennial wallflower and one lonesome nigella and a bud; also a few sprigs of heuchera flowers.

Beverly has been busy fiddling with Phormiums
Adding a yarn covered metal wreath ring adds a different texture and look to those little yogurt drink pots that Beveriy used at our workshop last year.
Beverly found a small Naylor base to create this pretty succulent ring.
Do you have Naylor base ring in your stock where the foam has been used and no longer fit for purpose ?
Why not try this idea and plant up a few succulents to give a nice display for the patio table.

Another beautiful door ring by our member Sally Cantes supporting the NHS with her pretty blue stars and ribbons.
Following Katherine Kear’s suggestion to creat a spring door ring. The ring symbolises unending & everlasting love, the cycle of life & hope. Green is for renewal, balance & progress. Kath also suggested the addition of a blue ribbon for the NHS.
Beverly did not have any ribbon but one of Pat Woodwards beautiful scarves came in very handy along with some Christmas rattan spheres sprayed blue.

A great idea posted on the NAFAS Facebook page for members to create a green door wreath and add a blue bow to show our support to the front line workers. This could be created from your garden or adapt a door wreath you already have. If you create one we'd love to see it email [email protected]
The orginal idea came from Katherine Kear, Chairman of the Three Counties and South Wales Area of NAFAS:
"Hello Everyone, I am hoping as many NAFAS people as possible could make or find a ring and add a blue ribbon to it and put it for the duration of lockdown on front doors or prominent windows. The green ring symbolises unending and everlasting love, the cycle of life and hope. Green is for renewal, balance and progress. The blue ribbon is for the NHS. Please send this to all your clubs and put it on the various media facilities to spread the word. Thank you so much for your help in passing this on. Pass the idea to family and friends, neighbours and more.
Thank you so much. Katherine Kear"

National Find A Rainbow Day is all about searching for signs for hope and promise.
In 2020, with millions of people quarantined due to the Corona Virus, Find a Rainbow Day has taken on new meaning. As a sign of hope, people placed drawings or photos of rainbows in their windows in support of the NHS - Beverly took this photographs a couple of years ago at the Madeira Flower Festival.
