We were delighted to be asked to take part in the Manuden Christmas Tree festival being held this weekend at St. Mary’s Church. Our members Betty Deeks & Pearl Broad decked their tree with fresh flowers decorations.
Manuden maybe a small village but it has so many clubs, groups and organisations all taking an active part in this very colourful festival. MORE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE IN THE GALLERY. |
Christmas Workshop with Adele Kent
19 members & 8 non members, some completely new to flower arranging, enjoyed a fun and informative workshop today with NAFAS East of England area tutor Adele Kent.
2 designs were created; firstly a table arrangement using a deco tray, copper mesh wire & covered sticks.
Secondly a Pave (Tapestry design) either using a shallow dish with floral foam or a posy pad.
Such a variety of plant material & accessories no two designs were the same.
Adele was a great tutor, very helpful with her knowledge & advice which was very much appreciated.
We had planned initially at this time of the year for our members to have one of the usual workshops but decided to combine it with the East of England area education initiative to bring flower arranging to those who have not tried to arrange flowers before.
Everyone went home feeling very festive having created two beautiful designs.
We handed out a feedback form
All felt they had learnt something new from the workshop, enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and several of our ‘new to flower arranging’ ladies will consider coming along to one of flower club meetings next year.
Thank you Adele & East of England’s Area Education.

Tuesday 3rd December -It might have been chilly outside but once inside our members and visitors (over 70) received a very warm welcome.
The changeover timings in this new venue are quite tight against the earlier group departing so doors could not open until 7.30 - Everyone was directed into the side hall where the sales tables looked very festive with lots of interesting items to purchase.
You can see by the faces that everyone was eager to get into the main hall and find a seat.
Mulled wine & mince pies were served and the raffle ticket sales were going well.
It was soon time to introduce our Nafas National Demonstrator Pam Lewis with her demonstration ‘Christmas Naturally’.Wow, Wow, Wow!
Wonderful flowers, beautiful staging, amusing stories & a spectacular finale. What a fantastic evening.
Thankyou to all who came & we hope that our visitors will come back again. You will always receive a warm welcome,
Pam has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be posted. Check out the gallery page.

Brenda Tubb never disappoints and this months meeting was no exception, her beautiful flowers, wonderful designs & witting and amusing tales had our members in fits of laughter. We were also lucky that Brenda had recently been to a demonstration with Dutch Flower Circus designers and she shared with us some wonderful new varieties of Gerbera.
Brenda has kindly given permission to post photographs of two of her designs.

The Winter edition of The Flower Arranger magazine was available to members and Sue Holman had created the festive star from the cover page. This design had been created by Helen Hare who had demonstrated at our club back in the summer.
Sue Holman brought along her 50 yr. certificate that had been presented at the recent East of England area meeting. Congratulations Sue, our longest serving member.
Following our recent workshop 'without floral foam' sales of metal wreath rings and water pearls were brisk!
Our Christmas workshop on 7/12 with Adele Kent is now full with a waiting list & we look forward to creating two festive designs.
The next meeting is 3rd December when Nafas National demonstrator Pamela Lewis will be giving a demonstration entitled 'Christmas Naturally'. Remember Doors Open at 7.30 for Festive Refreshments - Demonstration commences at 8pm.
Sue Holman has been a member of Herts & Essex Boundary Flower Club for 50 years! Sue was presented with a certificate acknowledging her long service at the Area Council meeting in October. Congratulations Sue. Our longest serving member.
Sorry about the back view - Sue was a bit quick to turn around and pose.
At Area Council meeting in October - Honorary member Jean Crane received her East of England Area Presidents badge from outgoing President Lionel Clark. - Congratulations Jean from all your friends at Herts & Essex Bondary Flower Club.
12th October - Our Class creating Floral Foam Free designs.
Our class today consisted of 12 who were shown ways in which floral designs can be created without the use of floral foam.
The first design demonstrated by Beverly Moore showed a table arrangement which can be adapted for any season.
Yarn had been wound around a metal wreath ring in advance of the class as this can be quite time consuming but the ladies had a choice of additional yarn to enhance the plain green if required on the day.
Examples of other materials to cover the rings were on display i.e. sisal, felt, fancy yarns etc.
There was also an assortment of items available to enhance the rings if required.
Waterpearls were provided but this design works just as well with crystals/glass beads.
NEVER THROW WATER PEARLS DOWN SINKS OR DRAINS. If stored in an airtight container they will last indefinitely.
Also on display were several other ideas without the use of floral foam.
A favourite was a posy pad made from yogurt drink bottles which Beverly had create over a few weeks whilst enjoying a healthy drink each day.
Using left over flowers and a few bits from her garden Beverly completed a few designs whilst the ladies prepared their second design, a hand tied design which Nicky Thompson demonstrated.
At previous classes some had indicated they would like to have a go at a hand tie and they all did very well.
Some found it a bit tricky especially when it came to tying the raffia but with practice they were assured it will come much easier.
Everyone received a handout giving lots of pictorial ideas on how to be creative without using floral foam plus a step by step guide on creating a hand tie.
The weather outside was wet and miserable but inside with so many smiling faces everyone forgot about the weather and enjoyed time learning new skills through friendship and flowers as you will see from the photographs.
Thank you Beverly & Nicky.
Thank you Tricia, Rosemary, Sally for all your help and a big Thank you to our 12 lovely ladies for making the day so special.
Susan, Ann G, Nikki, Hannah, Ann J, Christine, Mary, Sue, Karen, Margaret & Pat Visitor Sarah & our new member

OCTOBER MEETING
Thankyou to Leoni & Nicky for organising our Imposed working evening. Members and visitors alike enjoyed the challenge. We could use all or some of the components with the exception of the surprise bundle of gold and yellow midelino sticks which everyone had to include.
'Autumn Glory' was the title and was part of our competition programme. Well done on all who took part. Anne Bell kindly judged and critiqued the designs in each of the classes, novice, intermediate, & advanced.
Thankyou Anne for your constructive comments which everyone appreciated.
The quarterly cup (the design the judge would most like to take home) was won by Karen Gomez.
Members who did not take part came along and enjoyed chatting with friends. Thankyou to Marigold, Liz & Judy who supplied us with a cuppa and biscuits.
Orders were taken for 2020 Flower Arranger Magazine, members were signing up for our Christmas workshop in December. It was a busy evening and our new venue is proving to be very popular with members.

Now that September has arrived there was an autumn feel to our meeting last night. Clarissa Harris was our demonstrator with her title 'Ode to Autumn'.
Clarissa qualified as a Nafas demonstrator two years ago and her enthusiasm to provide a colourful and interesting display shone through, with wonderful stories accompanying each design and lots of hints & tips, we all enjoyed the evening very much.
Clarissa has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be featured.
We are now settling into our new venue & whilst there might have been an autumnal feel in the hall there definitely was a lot of warmth in the hall as we welcomed four new members.
Photographs from our visit to the Floral Art & Design Show, for those members who were unable to attend, were on display along with Leoni & Nicky's Highly Commended design 'Arabesque'.
Orders were being taken for next year's Flower Arranger magazine, Christmas cards and diaries (oh dear that means Winter and we have only just started Autumn!)
Next month we have a working 'Imposed' evening and we look forward to a fun evening through Friendship & Flowers.

Jacquie Aldous 'That's Entertainment Act I' (Jacquie has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be posted)
JULY MEETING We welcomed 45 members and 6 visitors to our new venue last night.
Jacquie Aldous was our demonstrator, this was the first time Jacquie, from Norfolk, had visited our club. It was interesting to hear about Jacquie's journey as a Nafas demonstrator along with her passion for the theatre depicted in her title 'That's Entertainment Act I' (Jacquie has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be posted)
Our competition this month was for our long established title of 'Roses, Roses, Roses' where only rose flowers are used. For many years it was rose foliage only but now any foliage can be used and this year to add something a little different the inclusion of a bottle or bottles which was suggested by one of the members.
The designs are always created at home and for some getting their exhibit to the venue in one piece was probably more of a challenge that creating it!
Well done to everyone who took park with congratulations to Leoni for winning the Roses, Roses cup & Amanda the quarterly cup (This is the design the judge would most like to take home).
The sales table was busy, raffle tickets were selling well, our Sparkle 5p box is filling up nicely and final details for our visit to the Floral Art & Design Show were confirmed. There was certainly a lovely atmosphere spreading friendship through flowers.
Visitors are always welcome and our next meeting on 6th August - visitors can come along free of charge to enjoy an evening with David Thomson and his demonstration 'That Man Again'
The address is
The Manuden Village Community Centre
David Collins Drive, Manuden, CM23 1EH

Annual Coffee morning.
With this being our Diamond Anniversary year, members & friends were invited to come along and enjoy time looking through the club's archives whilst catching up with friends over a cuppa and cake.
Beverly & David Moore hosted the event.
We were blessed with blue skies & sunshine and several sat outside and enjoyed Beverly & David's beautiful garden.
For those inside the reminiscing continued to flow.
We were delighted to welcome a founder member of the club and after 60 years she remembered well the details from minutes and other archived material on display.
As members browsed the various documents and photographs it brought back so many happy & amusing memories.
Another of our members, now in her nineties enjoyed recollecting many of the awards/events/festivals she had taken part in.
Some old friends mentioned in the archives are sadly no longer with us but were remembered fondly.
We are lucky to have so many longstanding members who still support the club and its events & can share their memories.
We are also lucky that those responsible for preserving the archives have enabled our newer members to appreciate the club's history.
Years ago minutes were hand written and newspaper cuttings & photographs pasted into scrapbooks. With modern technology we now have social media & websites but we are still able to have photographic memories printed into book form by our current archivist.
Beverly had organised a 'Diamond' themed raffle which was a great success. Thankyou also to those members who donated additional raffle prizes.
There was a delicious selection of cakes to enjoy. Thankyou to those members who kindly donated their time to do some baking, we were certainly spoilt for choice.
Another successful event for our club. THANKYOU to the 30 who came along to take a step down Memory Lane.
Photographs are in the Gallery with more to follow.

4th June - This evening we welcomed Helen Hare from Kent area with her title 'East Meets West'.
With beautiful arrangements using Lotus leaves, Lotus Pods and Peonies it was obvious where the 'East' influence came from along with amusing stories from Hong Kong and China.
The 'West' inspiration was the amazing and diverse collection of flowers & foliage that Helen had grown in her own English garden.
Each of the six designs demonstrated were displayed in containers that Helen had either hand made or decorated herself.
The clever use of a cooking aid to form a structure for a no-foam design was brilliant but we won't be showing a photo of this design as would not want to spoil it for other clubs who may see Helen demonstrate in the future.
Helen has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be shared. The first used recycled Christmas foam rings, covered in lotus pods and sprayed a beautiful copper colour. Flat rattan was intertwined to form a soft structure which gave an elegant cascade.
The photographs from our special diamond celebration last week were on display for the few members who did not attend to enjoy. Those that did attend we're still talking about how they enjoyed the evening.
This was our last meeting at the Barnabus Centre. From July 2nd our meetings will be held at Manuden Community Centre, David Collins Drive, Manuden, Bishop's Stortford CM23 1EH. With a new start time of 7.45pm.

SIXTY SPARKLING YEARS - Lots more photos on the gallery page
CELEBRATING SIXTY SPARKLING YEARS.
Our Flower club was founded in 1959 and to celebrate this milestone we invited members and guests to join us at the Manuden Community Centre to a demonstration by Nafas National Demonstrator Coral Gardiner.
There was a wonderful atmosphere in the hall as members and guests arrived, old friends catching up, new friends being made and neighbouring flower clubs coming to celebrate with us.
We were delighted to welcome our special invited guests.
Bishop’s Stortford Mayor Norma Symonds, Manuden Parish Councillor & WI President Jane Tresadern, East of England Area of NAFAS President Lionel Clark, Area Chairman Lesley Fairman, Cambridge Group Chairman Carol Giffen, Past Club Chairman Jean Crane, Gill Romanowski.
A display of archive material from the past 60 years brought back happy memories to so many as they reminisced glancing through the photo albums and scrap books.
Our Floral Photo frame proved a success and the photographs will now become part of our archive history.
It was soon time for everyone to settle into their seats to enjoy Coral’s demonstration “Sixty Sparkling Years” but not before our long standing member Pat Woodward read a beautiful poem she had written "Flowers".
Coral had endured a difficult journey due to traffic problems but once the curtains opened and first flower was placed she was at ease and we knew we were in for a wonderful evening.
A 3 tiered floral cake incorporating some fabulous hydrangeas, a candlebra table design in beautiful pastel peach colours, hanging designs of vibrant red flowers and garden foliage, shades of blue & purple for a foam free design and the star of the show a very grand pedestal containing orchids, lilies, roses, lisianthus, antirrhinum - No that wasn’t the end because for the final reveal 2 more white placements complete with plenty of sparkle made for a sparkling finale to the demonstration.
AS THIS WAS A SPECIAL DEMONSTRATION FOR OUR CLUB, CORAL HAS KINDLY GIVEN PERMISSION FOR US TO SHARE IT ALL WITH YOU.
Thankyou Coral just 'Lovely!'.
Our President Ann Godfrey gave the vote of Thanks.
Ann, together with treasurer Sue Holman cut the anniversary cake.
Sue Holman earlier in the evening was presented with a long service badge, having been a member of Herts & Essex Boundary Flower Club for 50 years. Congratulations Sue.
As the evening came to a close our Chairman Patricia Pratley thanked everyone who had come along & supported this event, it will certainly be long remembered.
We could not have done this without the help of our committee, committees other half's and to Anne Bell who kindly stepped in to help Coral behind the scenes.

We have enjoyed a wonderful few hours in London today. 7 of our members and 2 friends from Little Hallingbury Flower Club visited Osborne House, the Nafas headquarters in Devonshire Square, London EC2.
We were given a very warm welcome by Jan Law, National Chairman. We learnt of the history of the house which dates back to the 16th century.
We also heard, and could see as we went around the property all the hard work that has been done to renovate this historic building. None of us realised just how much of the work had been carried out by volunteers, also a vast amount of materials, fixtures & fittings have all been donated.
The building is on several levels and we were able to view them all, from the basement to the top floor with its beautiful high ceilings & a staircase with its ramped handrails & twisted shafts on candlestick-like bases.
Each room with its own atmosphere; offices, trading stock room, meeting & work shop rooms, library, bedrooms, lounge and kitchen and not forgetting the beautiful board room with views overlooking Devonshire Square where refreshments had been laid on for our group.
Apart from Beverly, who is on the NAFAS National Photography Committee, nobody in the group had any idea of what was behind the doors of Osborne House.
We pre-arranged the visit today to ensure that it was convenient? If ever the opportunity arises to visit you will certainly find it interesting and be given such a very warm welcome.
Thankyou Jan for making our visit so enjoyable
Thankyou Vanessa for the lovely refreshments
Thankyou Ken for our group photos
Thankyou Christina for the hug
Thankyou NAFAS.
It was a beautiful sunny day so after our group photo on the steps of Osborne House 6 of us took a walk to St. Dustan in the East Church Garden.
The Church of St Dunstan was originally built around 1100 and is a Grade I listed building. It was severely damaged in 1666 by the Great Fire of London. Rather than being completely built it was patched up. A steeple and tower was added in 1695-1701 by Sir Christopher Wren.
The Church was again severely damaged in the Blitz of 1941. During the re-organisation of the Anglican Church after World war II it was decided not to rebuild St Dunstan’s.
In 1967 the City of London decided to turn the remains into a public garden, which opened in 1970.
What a little gem, set amongst all the modern glass iconic buildings this small green space was a popular place for all those office workers wanting to escape thrift air conditioned offices.
We managed to find somewhere to sit and enjoy our sandwiches whilst listening to the birds, it was easy to forget we were in the middle of the business district in London.
It was soon time to head back to the Liverpool Street station but not before a brief stop for some retail therapy.
We retraced our steps via Devonshire Square again, looking up as we went to enjoy the skyline.
It's been a great day!

MAY MEETING
This month was a working evening where we created a Pot-et-Fleur.
Back in 1959 when our club was founded this was a popular design for the home. It is still a delightful design today combining pot plants and fresh flowers.
Some members used chicken wire to hold their flowers in place, others used glass or plastic tubes or jars.
Every design was different and the competition was well supported.
Photos of work in progress and final designs are in the Gallery.

Friday 3rd May - National Flower Arranging Day
Check out the gallery for photos of some of the posies & bouquets members placed around the vicinity.
Several people commented how it made their day to find the flowers.
Don’t forget to email your photos of posy/bouquets to [email protected]
Excellent coverage in the Bishop’s Stortford Independent local newspaper this week spanning the 60 years since our club was formed in 1959.
10TH APRIL - A group of us visited Capel Manor Gardens today. We were so lucky with the weather. Although a little chilly out of the sun there was certainly a warmth within our group.
A warm welcome by Linda & her assistant in reception on our arrival. With information leaflet and stickers we headed to the restaurant where there was time for coffee before our garden tour commenced.
Julie one of the senior gardeners at Capel was our guide, so knowledgeable and gave information about the various gardens & projects and how they had developed over the years.
We learnt about the history of the old house and the work by students in Horticulture, Saddlery, Animal Care & Floristry.
The site covers 34 acres, we saw a lot but the trial beds, woodland walk and beyond will be for another visit.
There was time for a group photo before our afternoon tea. Thankyou to the catering staff for our tea consisting of delicious sandwiches, scones with cream and jam & naughty but nice cakes.
To our coach driver Neil and colleague Clive thank you for the comfortable journey.
Capel Manor Gardens is not too far from where many of our members live and will no doubt be returning in the future.

April Meeting - Linda Kingcott 'The Green Man & Friends'
Another busy night as members collected their 'Spread a Little Sparkle' badges, 'Take Me Home' tags for National Flower Arranging Day on May 3rd and information leaflets for our next meeting when we will be creating a Pot-et-Fleur. It was soon time to settle into our seats for a demonstration by Linda Kingcott entitled 'The Green Man & Friends'. Linda's designs all had a story behind them from myths & legends starting with The Green Man. We won't mention the 6 different subjects so as not to spoil it for any other clubs who may have the same demonstration. It goes without saying, we were all intrigued by the stories.
Linda's passion for using garden plant material in her arrangements was evident, much to the delight of our members who are also keen gardeners. Linda has kindly given permission for two of her designs to be photographed.
SEE MORE PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY.
Beautiful flowers, wonderful foliage & fascinating stories certainly brightened up what had been a rather damp grey April day. Next month is a working evening - As it it our 60th anniversary year we thought it would be a good idea to revisit creating a Pot-et-Fleur design. For some members it will be the first time they have tried this design so it will be an interesting evening to see how this traditional design is interpreted.

It was a busy night at flower club this evening.
There were 13 entries in the competition 'Nature Awakening'. Well done to all who entered.
The 2019 programme cards were issued as members renewed their membership.
Our outing to Capel Manor Gardens on 10th April has been well supported.
More members showed an interest in the coach trip to the National Show in August.
Those little 5p coins found their way into Diamond Sparkle box for Nafas heritage fund and of course what we all came for, an enjoyable evening with East of England area demonstrator Sandra Price.
'Pot Luck' was the title of Sandra's demonstration. Each of the six designs were placed on or in beautiful containers all of which had an interesting story behind them.
Permission had been given to post two of Sandra's designs.
Sandra amused us with her little stories and the whole evening had a feel of warmth & friendship.
The competition results:-
Novice Class - 1st Hannah Shine, 2nd Avril Brampton.
Intermediate - 1st Sue Skegg, 2nd Alba Rodrigues, 3rd Ann Godfrey
Advanced - 1st & winner if quarterly cup Maggie Hansford, 2nd Beverly Moore, 3rd Sally Cantes, 4th Sue Holman & 5th Nicky Thompson.
A great start to our 60th Anniversary year.

This was the end of Sue's 3 year term as Chairman, that honour now goes to Tricia Pratley.
A gift voucher & plant was presented to Sue in appreciation of her commitment as Chairman over the past three years.
The committee was then elected - with a strong committee of 10 we look forward to the year ahead, a special year as it is our 60th Anniversary year.
The competition trophies were presented - Novice, Sue Skegg. Intermediate, Ann Jones & Advanced Beverly Moore
Following the AGM there was time before the presentation by Valerie Phillips for members to enjoy a cuppa.
The publicity table was busy with members collecting their Spring Edition of The Flower Arranger magazine.
A photographic archive of 2018 was on display for members to reminisce our last year programme of events.
Members were signing up for two trips we have planned - April a visit to Capel Manor Gardens & August The Floral Art & Design show in Islington.
Orders were taken for the 'Spread a little Sparkle' badges and several members popped their 5p's into the Sparkle pot to support the initiative received from Nafas to help towards the upkeep of Osborne House.
It was soon time to settle into our seats to hear from our member & Area speaker Valerie Phillips with her presentation 'Land of my Fathers'. An interesting & intriguing insight into the country of Valerie's birth.
You think you know your fellow members but we all have stories to tell and this evening Valerie did not disappoint.
To boost the raffle this evening there were some goodies from the sales table. The final ticket for the sales table items was drawn to raucous laughter as Nicky's ticket was drawn - Nicky runs the sales table!
Margaret Webb gave the vote of thanks & the meeting was closed by our new chairman with members in good mood and looking forward to our special diamond year.
